There are two new kids on the block at 149 Sydney Road – Barber Black Sheep and Pop Up 149 – and owner Gus Lundt is ecstatic about the move from Fitzroy to Brunswick.
“I had a small barber’s studio above a bar in Smith Street and no street frontage, so I knew I could do more and expand if I just found the right space,” Gus explained.
The search for affordable rent, the necessary amount of space, and the right street led Gus back and forth across the inner northern suburbs until he found the perfect combination in Sydney Road.
“Straight away Sydney Road struck me as a great street and full of potential – it’s colourful, busy and full of life,” Gus said.
And the warm welcome from the neighbours just reinforced this.
“When we were still renovating our great neighbours at Lulamae, Vicious Venus, Penny Lane and NMBQ all dropped in to say hello, offer advice, and make us feel really welcome.”
“Now we’ve been open for six weeks I’ve discovered that warm welcome is just typical of Brunswick. Locals regularly walk by and give us a wave, guys needing a haircut are returning and becoming regular clients. It’s been a great move to Brunswick – business is booming and we have plans to do more.”
While Barber Black Sheep is permanent, soon Pop Up 149 will morph into selling men’s second-hand Japanese designer clothing, and there are plans for a third business – a dog grooming salon called Mutt Manor to be run by Gus’ partner Troy in the back studio which is currently tenanted by Breathe Architects.
And all of this has been made possible by the warm welcome and the great support shown by Sydney Road traders and locals.
